Tucson Auction 2003!

Saturday, February 8th

Congratulations to EVERYONE who had anything
to do with the auction! It was a great deal of fun and a
raging success.
As for rumors of friction, I stopped by Darryl
Pitt's room before my auction and offered to put out fliers
for him in the hall, to which he was very warmly responsive.
He came to my auction and left an absentee bid on a particularly
nice specimen – which he won – considerably below his
maximum, by the way. Unfortunately, I didn't get out of the
hall until after 1 AM and to bed at 3 AM, so, there was no way
I could make it to Darryl's auction at 10 AM the next morning.
No "slight" was intended or taken, only exhaustion and a missed

opportunity for even more goodies. So, so much for that tale.
Special thanks to Blaine Reed and the
Jim Tobin / Paul Harris syndicate who rode a fabulous
race for a beautifully fusion crusted unidentified NWA
stone. Thanks to Adam for submitting a $38,000 Taza
specimen -that sold! I am especially indebted to ET who
provided wine for the non-beer drinkers in the group,
to Mike and Bill Jensen who poured the brew, to Mark
Bostic and Rosie Hackney who did a knock up job assisting,
and to many, many others too numerous to mention - THANKS!

(the following is a response to some of the comments which
have appeared on the list in the last 2 days):

2-12-03 AM
Good morning everyone!
First, let me say I am impressed with what people
deem me capable of. While I collect all payments and
pay off every single consignor present the night of the
auction, it DOES take a few days to:
1) drive the motor home home (had to)
2) jump back into teaching classes at full speed (Had to)
3) unload the motor home (not even close!)
4) READ, let alone respond to hundreds of emails (in process)
5) check snail mail for crucial envelopes and packages (not
even close)
6) calculate all the absentee bids (not yet)
7) charge all absentee bidders (ibid)
8) notify all absentee bidders (ibid)
9) notify all sellers NOT at the auction (not yet)
10) package and pay all sellers not present at the auction (ibid)
….etc, etc, etc…… you get the idea.
I just got home, folks…
As for someone's suggestion my auction
start earlier – I would love that! HOWEVER, my auction
is called "the people's auction" specifically because everything
in it is presented by others – not me. Therefore, any and
all dealers entering specimens can't get there earlier than
the time frame I already have arranged, even though I get
there two and a half hours earlier to process entries.
For instance, this year, several KEY items in the auction
were provided by dealers who could not get away from customers
until later and did not enter the auction hall until after 7 PM.
They included 3 different dealers with a 114g Tatouine, a huge
Campo Nuevo and the 78 Kg. main mass of Taza! No one would
have been happy to have their items excluded from the auction.
So, unfortunately, due to how things go for dealers
at the show, the auction will continue to start at 7:30, though,
I WILL work on ways to get buyers paid out and sellers paid off
faster at the conclusion of sales. (I was shocked at some of the
hostility when I took everyone on a "first in, first out" basis.
Is there some other way this could have been done that
would have been more fair? {I am also open to suggestions for
greater efficiency in this})
As for the lost Cat Mountain…. this is something that
should have been addressed off list and I will, of course, work
that out with the consignor. There are several issues involved,
including, but not limited to:
1) almost certainly, the piece was MISPLACED, not stolen.
2) It will PROBABLY be recovered
3) everything WAS locked in a cabinet, but it would be prohibitively
expensive to rent ANOTHER cabinet just for the auction hall. (People
complain about Darryl charging a substantial buyers' premium,
but look at his overhead. It COST me well over $2,000 to put this
auction on and I can assure you it COST Darryl a great deal more
to put his on).
4) sellers present were asked to sign a release stating all items
are the responsibility of the seller until sold at auction, at which
time I become fully responsible. Unfortunately, sellers who submitted
by mail did not sign ANY forms. This will be handled differently
in the future and, in this instance, I will be working out an acceptable
outcome with the seller.
Yes, it would be ideal to have another locked cabinet at
the auction, but this is the FIRST TIME IN FOUR YEARS a peace has
turned up missing and I personally packed it out of the display
room and could not find it when setting up at the hall. I am
convinced no one "stole" this piece (and there is a decent chance
it will actually be found).
Again, this should all be off list, and I apologize to any
list members uninterested in such. In fact, I will not post this to
the list… I will post it on my auction page and notify list members
they can go there if they are interested in same….
Best wishes to all, Michael

ADDENDUM:

Why I will NOT be posting the sale prices of my auction:
There have been some very interesting claims made regarding
auctions in general and meteorite auctions in particular. I have read
claims that what a meteorite sells for at auction IS the value of that
material. I could not disagree more. What an item sells for reflects
ONLY what a very limited group of people were willing and able to
pay at a particular moment in time and when presented with many
OTHER opportunities simultaneously. Therefore, it most definitely
does NOT reflect AT ALL the "true market value" of didly!
That is exactly why auctions are SO exciding. People
might (and do) get real bargains…. and, not infrequently, there
will be two or more who very much want the same item, and the
price will go WAY up…. again, proving that what ANY item sells
for in an auction in no way reflects "true market value."
NOW, let's take meteorites at the Tucson Show, in
particular. You have most of the world's largest dealers paying
the cost of renting rooms for 10 days, travel expenses, etc, ON
TOP OF all the usual expenses they endure. Then, to top that off,
they almost always charge LESS for everything they offer.
That is one of the main reasons I sell material MOSTLY
presented by these dealers, themselves – and at the lowest fees
I can afford to offer. This makes it THEIR auction, as well as the
buyers' and the individual collectors who consign pieces.
If anyone thinks I am going to PUBLISH prices paid at
my auction to fly in the face of these honest and hard working
colleagues, they are seriously mistaken. I can see how people
would innocently seek this information and how some would
feel free to provide it. I do not. To imply in any way that the
prices paid at my auctions might represent the "market value"
of the material in question would be, in my estimation, both
misleading and irresponsible.
Therefore, if you want to know the prices, come to
the auction!
(in no way is the above statement intended to
reprimand, criticize or condemn ANYONE who sees this
circumstance differently)
Sincerely, Michael Blood

*************************************************************************

ABSENTEE BIDS: One of the following are required to place an absentee bid:
Visa or Mastercard number and expiration date on file OR a pledge to make immediate
payment from a PayPal account with a current ballance sufficient to cover all bids
you wish to place.
Fee for absentee bids is 5% (only if you win the bid, of course).
Your maximum bid will NOT be placed, but rather bid up one increment at a time in
response to live bidding at the auction. In other words, you will get the item at the
lowest bid possible (similar to eBay). (On no minimum items, I generally start the
bidding at 1/3rd to 1/2 the price I estimate at will be the selling price). This gives you
the same advantage as being there.
You may phone and leave your Visa or Mastercard (only) number with expiration
date, your address and phone number (if they are not already on file with me) or
send them in at least 3 different emails. Be sure you receive an email response from
me confirming your bid(s). (Emails sometimes get "lost").

-------------------------------------------

LOCATION: Tucson Jr. Chamber of Commerce Hall at 1115 E. Ft. Lowell.
-------------------------------------------

-DIRECTIONS-
--------------------------------------------
FROM THE FWY:
1) Take the FWY to Miracle Mile
2) Take the Miracle Mile exit - go East about 1.5 miles to Oracle
3) Turn Left onto Oracle & go about 1/8th mi. to W. Ft. Lowell
FROM INN SUITES: - Turn L. Leaving Inn Suites parking lot onto Granada
going “north” - away from “Downtown.” It will change into Main about
the time you cross Speedway and again, into Oracle after you negotiate
the traffic circle. Go about .5 mi.
4) Turn right onto W.Ft. Lowell (it has a traffic light)-it becomes E. Ft. Lowell
after about .5mi. & about 1 mi. further you will come to 1115 E. Ft. Lowel
(next to the Greek Church). There is plenty of parking next to the hall.

Noted author, O. Richard Norton and his wife, Dorthy will both be there selling
their respective books and personally autographing them for one an all. Dorthy
has recently had a fossil book published FULL of her illustrations on Ice Age Mamals
and Richard, of course, has published two of the most important books on meteorites ever
released. His ROCKS FROM SPACE II and THE CAMBRIDGE ENCYCLOPEDIA
OF METEORITES belong in every collector's library.

This is a LARGE room with a 275 person capacity with over 100 chairs, 8
tables and plenty of parking. So, be prepared to see a LOT of specimens & meet
lots of people face to face. EVERYONE is invited to attend, bid and/or sell. There
will be micromounts, macromounts, small specimens, part slices, whole slices,
whole specimens, huge/multi-kilo specimens & RARE thin sections.
All are welcome to enter specimens, whether you are a dealer or modest collector

wanting to sell (a) specimen(s) which is/are now upgraded in your collection. No item is
“too big” or “too small.” This is NOT an event just for dealers - so, please feel free to
submit any item(s). However, when the list goes over 100, I will begin to pick and
choose among items offered as to which will be best to include in the auction.
This promises to be a FUN time & everyone is invited to sell, buy or just enjoy the
festivities & to go to a late dinner afterwards. Last year was a blast &
most of us went to Las Fuentes afterwards.
This year, by popular demand, there will be a keg of beer in the auction building

(which has an "Old West" feel to it). This is an opportune time for many of us on the
list who know one another only via e-mails to meet face to face & get to spend some
fun time together. (If you buy some stuff at the show - bring it to the auction & at the
dinner afterwards we can all Show & Tell - one of the more fun aspects of collecting,
in my book).

Most auctions now customarily charge buyers a 10% (or more) "buyers' premium"
which is added on to the winning bid price. NOT SO at this auction. Also, those who
consign items for sale will be charged only 10% of the final selling price. (25% is the
norm for consignments at an auction).
I only require 3 things:
1) I ask that everyone just buying arrive between 6:00 & 7:00 to pre-register

& get a number & examine specimens that will be offered (& take advantage to meet
“old friends” you only know by e-mail address! and "have a cold one" if you so choose
- or, in Rob's case, a warm one.
(Also, don't forget to stop by Rm 316 at Inn Suites Thursday, Friday or Saturday
to see the items on display).
2) Those also selling, please have material at Room 316 by late Wed. or, if you are

hoping to enter items the day of the auction, at the site between 5 PM and 7PM - the
earlier, the better. (Late arrivals will be accommodated, if possible, up to 7:30)
Due to time constraints (we ran pretty late the last couple of years) I am limiting the
auction to 125 lots. So, the better the specimen and the earlier you arrive to register,
the more sure you can be of getting your piece(s) in the auction – and an early arrival

allows you to take a close look at the material available (though most of the pieces will
be available for viewing Wed. through Sat. at In Suites in Rm # 316 (where the
Labennes have been the last several years.
3) The Jr. Chamber of Commerce failed to renew their liquor license, but a keg
of beer will be on ice for the complimentary whetting of whistles. However, please drink

responsibly and have a designated driver.

I will be accepting absentee bids
prior to the auction. See above for details.

- I will be accepting Visa and Mastercard payments for the auction.

(Personal checks and, of course, cash are also welcome)

- There will be NO buyers' premium for purchases made by
cash or check, making the high bid the actual price paid. (The

exception is for purchases made with Visa/Mastercard,
in which cases, there will be a 5% processing fee charged).

- Additional staff are being recruited to facilitate security and
a more rapid "cash out" period at the conclusion of the auction.
If you are interested in being paid to help out, please contact me directly.

It is my intention to retain the open atmosphere which has characterized
my auctions since the beginning, being; "the people's auction" where collectors
can offer or buy lower end material to upgrade their collections, drop specimens
off an hour before the auction and have a fun social atmosphere which, I feel,
provides a real service to the meteorite community. However, there are now quality
specimens for sale to the more discriminating collector and opportunities for dealers to
make major purchases and sales, as well.

This year's auction promises to be, by far, the best to date!

(If you would like to put an exceptional specimen on consignment, please contact me at mlblood@cox.net for a full description of terms and conditions)
